Vasoactive intestinal peptide, commonly abbreviated VIP, is a naturally occurring 28-amino-acid neuropeptide belonging to the secretin–glucagon peptide family. It is distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems and is also present in several peripheral tissues.
VIP produces cellular signalling primarily through the G-protein-coupled receptors VPAC1 and VPAC2, with some activity at the PAC1 receptor. Receptor activation is generally associated with adenylate-cyclase activity and increased intracellular cyclic AMP.
VIP is investigated in laboratory models involving neuropeptide signalling, smooth-muscle physiology, vascular responses, secretory processes and immune-cell communication. These research contexts do not establish the safety or effectiveness of an unapproved VIP product for human use.
